Extra, Extra, REED All About It! La Lune Collection Introduces New Designs of Handwoven Reed

We’re always excited to introduce “newcomers” to our collection, and our latest new additions have us particularly enthusiastic. Four beautiful seating designs, fashioned by our La Lune Collection furniture artisans of hand-woven reeds, project a sophisticated rustic vibe that complements many interior design aesthetics, from traditional to contemporary to (naturally) rustic.

But don’t be fooled into thinking of any of these beauties as “just another pretty face” – the art of weaving reeds is a serious skill that’s been passed down from generations, initially developed as basket weaving. As far back as ancient Egypt, in fact, delicately woven rush or reed furniture was buried with pharaohs – Tutankhamen himself (ca. 1341-1323 BC) was buried with several reed pieces including a chair seat, a headboard, and a stool! Inspired by this Egyptian woven furniture the ancient Romans adopted the furniture technique and subsequently spread the style across their vast empire.

Today, our master craftsmen have acquired the knowledge and expertise to create reed pieces that are just as strong and durable as they are beautiful. We think Confucius had it right when he mused that “the reed which bends in the wind is stronger than the mighty oak which breaks in the storm”!
