Rock On! Making a Design Statement with Rustic Rocking Chairs.

Well, who doesn’t love a rocking chair?  While the earliest rocking chairs can trace their origins to North America and England in the early 18th century, today there is truly a rocking chair style for everyone. Not many furniture pieces can create as much of a sense of total relaxation as rocking chairs do, and the added bonus of rustic rockers is that they make a strong design statement, all the while soothing frazzled nerves. We’ve gathered together several examples of beautiful rooms that feature rustic rocking chairs in a dramatic, scene-stealing way – take a look!

La Lune Porch Style: The Rustic Retreat

Whenever we come across an image of a beautiful patio or porch – or any space for that matter – showcasing La Lune Collection furniture we can’t wait to share it with the world!  And so, we are thrilled to reveal here a breathtaking porch overlooking the North Carolina mountain range that recently came to our attention.

This amazing installation, named the Mountain Air Family Lodge, comes to us courtesy of the very talented Kathryn Long, ASID in Asheville, NC and Platt Architecture, PA, in Brevard, NC.

Perched beside a lush, verdant mountain vista, this porch is a perfect place for family gatherings. It’s easy to imagine starting the day with breakfast at this table, seated on the charming La Lune Collection chairs. Designer Kathryn chose the creamy, warm “Navajo” premium finish for these Side Chairs #1154, and opted for removable seat cushions, for easy maintenance, in a cheery red plaid fabric.

If beginning the day with breakfast overlooking the mountains seems divine, then how about ending the day with the same view? Dusk couldn’t be lovelier, when rocking into the evening on these comfortable La Lune rocking chairs nestled around a rustic round fire pit. These particular Rocking Chairs #1190 feature a “Wheat” premium finish on peeled bark, which along with the removable seat cushions makes them ideal for use completely outdoors.

La Lune Writes… National Haiku Day is on April 17th

We love holidays at La Lune Collection – the anticipation, the preparation, the celebration – but we admit to having a special fondness for the quirky, offbeat holidays.

Enter National Haiku Day! This special day is celebrated on April 17th, and according to the Haiku Foundation it was “registered by Sari Grandstaff in 2007 and implemented as a project of The Haiku Foundation since 2012, and occurs in the heart of the United States’ celebration of National Poetry Month.” In the spirit of the day, La Lune Collection enthusiastically offers up three of our own compositions.

The beautiful Canopy Bed #4280 is a true La Lune fan favorite, repeatedly “tagged”, “shared”, “pinned” and “commented on” in social media platforms including Pinterest, Facebook, and Houzz. Surely it deserves its own Haiku tribute!

Ralph Lauren is an undeniable and celebrated master of style. It comes as no surprise, then, that he chooses La Lune Collection furniture to grace his homes, including this delightful porch at his Double RL Ranch in Colorado.  Pictured here are rustic Club Chairs #1006, Sofa #1002, and Porch Swing #1091.

A La Lune Collection Tribute to “Trees”

“I think that I shall never see a poem lovely as a tree” – so go the words penned by Joyce Kilmer in 1913 in his legendary work, “Trees”.

At La Lune Collection we, too, are great admirers of the tree, marveling at its beauty, dignity and strength.  Several of our rustic furniture designs pay special tribute to their source, the tree, by actually echoing and embodying it. We are pleased and proud to share some of those designs here.

Can a hall tree really be a tree? The answer is that it can be, if it’s from La Lune Collection!  A beautiful way to bring a touch of nature indoors, this design is as elegant as it is functional.

Rustic Dining Table #3089

A round table makes conversation easy for everyone seated, and this round rustic dining table is a La Lune favorite.  Its inspired rustic design is created by our master craftsmen and features a delicate, precise branch “apron”, and a striking and graceful organic base of free-form branches.

A design masterpiece – graceful, freeform lines of natural branches are the distinctive design feature on this rustic bed’s headboard and footboard. Strikingly beautiful, it will most surely draw compliments and comments from all who see or sleep in it!

A tribute to “Trees” and its
author, Joyce Kilmer, would not be complete without enjoying the poem in its
entirety, and so we end here with a “reading” of it.

Joyce Kilmer

Joyce Kilmer

~ Joyce Kilmer, 1913

I think that I shall never see
A poem lovely as a tree.

A tree whose hungry mouth is prest
Against the earth’s sweet flowing breast;

A tree that looks at God all day,
And lifts her leafy arms to pray;

A tree that may in summer wear
A nest of robins in her hair;

Upon whose bosom snow has lain;
Who intimately lives with rain.

Poems are made by fools like me,
But only God can make a tree

It’s Spring! Time to Come Outdoors With La Lune Collection.

Finally. The Real Story of La Lune Collection’s Little Red Riding Hood.

La Lune Collection's Little Red Riding Hood

La Lune Collection’s Little Red Riding Hood

Long time followers of La Lune Collection are sure to recognize the memorable photo of Little Red Riding Hood sitting on a La Lune Collection canopy bed and reading to an attentive big, bad wolf. But what they won’t know is the story behind the image – until now.

This particular Little Red happens to be none other than Cristina, the 9 year old daughter of La Lune founders Mario and Cathy Costantini, photographed when she was in the 3rd grade. And the “big, bad wolf” was an actual pet wolf named Sheba, who belonged to an elderly neighbor couple residing down the street from the La Lune Collection factory.

The photo shoot is a story unto itself. Taken in the studios of Milwaukee photographer Greg Gent – La Lune professional photographer and long-time friend of Mario and Cathy (he even photographed their wedding many years ago) – the shot predates photo-shop and other graphic technology that we take for granted in 2014. Mario and Greg worked to make the set “just right” – a basket of ruby-red flowers, fallen leaves from the forest scattered on the “ground” – even the dove was real, Greg’s pet bird who lived in the photo studio. Grandma Yolanda Costantini lovingly sewed a sweet hooded Little Red cape, and after Cathy carefully braided her daughter’s long, thick hair Cristina daintily assumed her place on the bed, book in hands, a veritable picture-perfect Little Red Riding Hood straight from the story books. When all else was ready, wolf Sheba was led into the studio, ready for her close-up and destined for stardom. Coaxed to sit opposite Cristina, Sheba was an attentive, obedient model – at first. Cristina spoke to Sheba, and Sheba listened –  until, that is, Sheba caught a glimpse of the small, pure white dove delicately perched on the canopy bed’s headboard. Greg had just enough time to get off ONE shot, after which Sheba lunged for the bird. The little dove darted to safety, Little Red hopped off the bed, and that was it – no flurry of camera clicks, no subsequent clever photo-shop adjustments, no rescheduled studio time. Just one PERFECT shot, and that’s what is seen here.

And where is the La Lune Collection Little Red Riding Hood cast of characters today? Greg continues to operate his successful photography business, Mario and Cathy, and the beautiful Canopy Bed #4278, can be found in La Lune Collection’s factory showroom, and Little Red is a journalist in New York. And, “big, bad wolf” Sheba is forever merrily chasing birds with the rest of her pack, in the big Happy Hunting Grounds in the sky.

Bunk Beds and Trundle Beds from La Lune – Not Just for Kids Anymore

At La Lune Collection we are big fans of the bunk bed – and we know we’re not alone. In recent years bunk beds have demonstrated that they’re not just for kids’ rooms, dorm rooms, and summer camp anymore – as we, as a culture, downsize and recognize that smaller space can equal a better lifestyle, bunk beds are a proving themselves to be a stylish and functional answer to space saving concerns. Further, anyone who has slept in a bunk bed recently can attest to how much fun it is – a room full of bunks can be an entertaining place for the young, and the young at heart. Who wouldn’t want to tuck in for the night in the beautiful Bunk Bed #4255, which boasts a twin bed over a full-size bed?

Another time-honored solution for making the most of sleeping space is the trundle bed. The trundle bed itself has an interesting history, and was designed originally for servants who remained by a family member’s side during the night.  Today’s trundle beds are beautiful and practical, as evidenced by Trundle Bed #4038.

And what makes better use of space than bunk beds or trundle beds alone? Bunk beds with a pullout trundle underneath, of course!

The bunk bed with trundle, like Bunk Bed #4256 and Bunk Bed #4259 shown below, works especially well in vacation homes, or for families who like to have relatives and friends visit often.

Eco-Friendly? La Lune Has It Covered.

In recent years, the terms “going green” and “eco-friendly” have become buzz words in the media and in product packaging. The term “eco-friendly” has been used so frequently, and for so many different products and practices, that its meaning has quite literally been diluted.

Eco-friendly means earth-friendly or not harmful to the environment – according to Merriam-Webster, “not environmentally harmful” – and the first known use of the term can be tracked to 1989.

However, La Lune Collection’s attention to this ideal precedes the term’s first appearance by about a decade. Since La Lune Collection’s inception in 1979, before eco-friendly became fashionable, we have been concerned about the environment – particularly about deforestation by the lumber and furniture industries. Many of our customers are surprised to learn that La Lune Collection is one of the most eco-friendly furniture companies in the world.

It’s true! And here are the top 10 reasons why:

1.  La Lune harvests only fast growing and invasive wood species such as poplar and willow for the production of all its products. La Lune harvesting is actually beneficial to the restoration of bio-diversity to forests which have been previously clear cut by the lumber industry.

2.  All harvesting is done by hand by La Lune employees in order to maintain complete control and supervision of the harvesting process. All methods of harvesting are low-tech and eco-friendly using only hand tools. No heavy logging equipment is used.

3.  All woods are harvested near the factory in Wisconsin, thereby reducing the negative impact   and inefficiency of transportation and eliminating any impact on the rainforests of the world where much lumber is harvested by the furniture industry.

4.  La Lune’s unique yet low-tech and low-processing manufacturing methods are eco-friendly and efficient. Most processes are done entirely by hand using environmentally sound and efficient manufacturing methods. These methods, although sometimes slower, use little energy and generate virtually no waste or pollution, just like a simple low-tech bicycle is slower but much more energy efficient and eco-friendly than any high-tech automobile.

5.  The turn of the century La Lune factory buildings and machinery have been carefully re-cycled and re-stored incorporating high efficient use of energy. The La Lune factory and most of its machines and equipment date back to the early 1900’s. Wood and other waste products are used to fire the kiln and heat the factory building. Even wood shaving waste is used by local farmers for animal bedding.

La Lune Collection Factory, Showroom, and Offices

6.  La Lune carries no inventory of furniture and manufactures “just in time” as items are sold. This efficient “just in time” manufacturing process reduces the expense and the inefficiencies associated with the production and storage of finished inventory. La Lune markets and sells its products only in the US and Canada in order to reduce the shipping distance to its clients.

7All La Lune finishes are non-polluting, non-toxic, non-flammable, water-based finishes which are locally manufactured exclusively for La Lune. Finishes are applied in dip tanks in order to eliminate the airborne pollution, energy costs, and waste products which are generated with typical spray booth applications.

8.  La Lune furniture is designed and constructed to last for generations, will become tomorrow’s valuable antiques, and thereby will reduce negative environmental impact and landfill waste associated with cheaply made, disposable, non-degradable furniture. However, La Lune furniture is 100% bio-degradable, if it should someday be discarded.

La Lune Collection Factory Showroom

9.  La Lune’s human sustainability is an important part of its environmental sustainability;  in 1986, La Lune relocated its operations to an abandoned factory building in a central city neighborhood now called Riverwest. La Lune has helped to restore the neighborhood by rehabbing the building, providing jobs, and opening a youth center for at-risk children near the factory in 1989.

10. La Lune’s furniture, factory, and company history provide a perfect educational tool to teach others about eco-friendly manufacturing. School and civic groups of all ages regularly tour the La Lune factory in order to learn the La Lune philosophy and process from its founder Mario Costantini. La Lune is also actively supportive of local environmental initiatives, including the Urban Ecology Center, located on the Milwaukee River a few blocks from the La Lune factory.

A Look at the Deacon’s Bench (and Other Rustic Benches from La Lune)

Not long ago we added an updated photo of the beautiful Deacon’s Bench #1149 to our website – which then led us to wonder “where in the world did the Deacon’s Bench get its name?”  This immediately sent us into research mode, and after a little digging we happened upon a bit of interesting history which we are happy to share!

Rustic Deacon's Bench #1149 by La Lune Collection

Rustic Deacon’s Bench #1149 by La Lune Collection

It’s widely known that some religious institutions identify certain respected church “elders”, or “deacons” of the congregation. Essentially, these are non-ordained lay people who assist the pastor, rector, or priest of the church – as the case may be – with his or her various spiritual duties.

It seems that at some point in our country’s early history it became customary for a simple bench with an upright back to be set aside in the sanctuary for ONLY the deacons to sit upon. Often set at a 90 degree angle to the pulpit or lectern, this bench was used by the deacons during services and for special church functions.  Naturally, the bench came to be known as the Deacon’s Bench – and so the term stuck – and subsequently wooden benches with very high and straight backs are today referred to as Deacon’s Benches and are now often used at entry points in a home.

La Lune Collection’s Deacon’s Bench #1149 is indeed a beautiful example of this historically significant furniture design.

Baby, it’s Cold Outside – Pull Up a (Rustic) Chair Next to the Fire!

It’s a winter wonderland in La Lune Collection’s beloved Wisconsin, which means warm and relaxed fireplace gatherings are in order. We love fireplaces – they automatically add warmth to a room and a home, and not just in the physical sense but also in the emotional character of the space. However, a fireplace alone doesn’t bring true comfort into your home – the furniture and accessories you choose to decorate the space around the fireplace are what really give it that cozy feeling, and adding a rustic chair or two (or three) is a great way to start.

So go ahead –  pull up that rustic chair and join us on a photo tour of some of our favorite fireplace settings!
